The world price of skim milk powder has tumbled.
In last year's dairy boom, milk powder rose from $2000 to more than $5000 a tonne.
But the price has now fallen $1000 a tonne in a month, to US$3200.
Bega Cheese chairman Barry Irvin says the US is dumping cheap product on the world market.
"We have to really hold our nerve, because I think overall the pricing trends are stable and moving to strong," he says.
"But at this particular moment, there is skim milk powder coming on the market out of the US that is very cheap and driving those markets down.
"And when you get a market correction in one commodity, you will see customers where they can shift to using that commodity and that will start to affect others."
